Summer End

Greetings from Boston, where Summer is already retreating from the cooler days and crisp nights that signal the beginning of Fall. These days find us in and out of the hospital, currently in. Mia was admitted a few weeks ago because her seizures had spiraled out of control. Clusters are what they're called - many seizures in a short amount of time. She was stabilized in the hospital and after a few days was released.

They put her on a short term seizure med that is meant to help break the cluster cycle but is not meant for long term use as a resistance is quickly built and the drug looses its effectiveness. So when we started to wean her off the drug (following Dr. recommendation) she started seizing badly again. We stopped weaning and put her back on the full dose (following Dr. recommendation). We met with Mia's doctors on Tuesday and they recommended that we have her admitted to the hospital again so they could monitor the weaning process.

The hardest thing about all of this is there doesn't seem to be a solid explanation of why Mia's seizures have gotten so out of control. Her usual pattern is she gets some type of infection which leads to increased seizures. So far no infection has been detected, though a recent test is showing signs of a bladder infection.

Despite all of this Mia is in good spirits and generally happy as near as we can tell. We hope to be out of the hospital this weekend or early next week. And then we hope to get Mia back to school which she loves so.

Thank you to all who may read this and think good thoughts for us. Please keep us in your prayers and always in a positive light.
